Nike Pro City

I recently covered the Nike Pro City Basketball league held at Hunter College (NYC).

Through out the season many NBA players suited up. On this particular night I caught a double header (final four) which featured NBA players Ron Artest and Smush Parker. The street ballers were not about to be out done by the NBA ballers. One player who stood out was Ryan SPECIAL FX Williams. His hops would definitely put him in contention for an NBA slam Dunk competition. This picture recently made Pic of the week on the weekly show SUMMER BALL on the MSG network.

On February 5, 2008 I was at the swamp shooting the Lakers and Nets game. I admit I was excited because I had finally gotten to see Kobe in action. The previous year he was suspended for the Knicks game because of and elbow to the face of Ginobli. During the Nets game Kobe touched the ball a lot but did not come close to his scoring average. Kobe finished the game with a stat line of 6 point (3-13 from the field), 5 rebounds and 8 assists. You would have thought that the Lakers had won the championship. During the fourth quater the Nets fans were chanting M-V-P, M-V-P, M-V-P. On Tuesday Kobe was announced as the MVP of the NBA. Kobe has never finished higher than 3rd place.

I read a recent article in the NYtimes that talked of how institutions are deciding on how sports can be reported. Is there a difference between sports Bloggers and news reporters? MLB ha gone to the extent of telling reporting agencies how many pictures they can post and the amount of time the pictures can stay up. Is this fair? What about the first amendment with regards to Freedom of the Press? I am sure it is an uphill battle but it is a battle that must be fought.

In December I had the pleasure of shooting the Big Apple Basketball Challenge. I must say for a HS event this was well ran. If the game time was 6:15 the ref was tossing the jump ball at 6:14:58. On Saturday I had to leave before the last game started to shoot the NY Knicks vs. Sixers. What a disappointment!!!! The Knicks were blown out of the building by a score of 105-77 while back at Baruch College Holy Cross defeated Boys and Girls HS in double OT 78-73. The students athletes are not pros but they put on a performance that shows their passion for the game. They played hard for the sake of winning and not a pay check.
Another thing that stood out was the fact Big Apple Basketball not only celebrated Basketball but also celebrated academic achievements. There was one student who won MVP of his game and also had 99% GPA this quite an accomplishment along with the fact that he scored 1500 of his SAT. If this event is any indication as to how Big Apple Basketball runs its program I suggest all serious student Athletes click on to www.bigapplebasketball.com

I recently read an opinion column in the NYPost that posed an interesting question in regards to Sexual harassment case against NY Knicks team president/Coach Isiah Thomas. I have not followed the case enough to have an opinion on guilty or innocent. I have heard in the news that the judge said that Annucha Brown’s team presented a weak case. If this is the case and Isiah is cleared of any wrong doing…Will he still hold his positions with the Knicks? Isiah said “A white male calling a black female a Bitch…That is a problem for me” When asked about a black man calling a black female a Bitch Thomas responded “Not as much, I am sorry to say I do make a distinction” Although Thomas never admitted to calling Ms. Brown a Bitch, is this Don Imus all over again? Imus was fired for his comments. I have been at MSG during many Knick games and I am sure that there will be fan uproar from all women of color.
With the exception of a few players most of the team is African American. How do you think their .mothers feel that the president/coach of their son’s team thinks it’s OK for a Black Male to call them “BITCHES”?

I recently shot the US Open. A fan Favorite Serena Williams was defetaded by the eventual Champ. Many reporters were disgusted by Serena’s post game interview. She mentioned that the only reason she showed up was because she did not want to be fined because she can’t pay for the fines because she keeps loosing. Do you think that athletes should be made available to the media after games?
